Here are seven tips to help you have the best fall skincare. Yes, the best because even dermatologists swear by them!

Before we dive in, let’s explain what goes on with your skin when we swap up seasons. Everyone falls in love with fall. It’s the season of Halloween, pumpkins, colourful leaves, and the list goes on! However, it is also the season of cool, dry air. And our skin immediately reacts to the changing temperatures. When it’s summer, it’s more humid, and your skin retains moisture which protects its barrier. But during fall, our skin dries out from the cool, dry air outside and from the heaters we use in our homes when it’s the end of fall or the beginning of winter. Our skin loses its moisture which affects its barrier leading to sensitive, irritated and dry skin. That is why a fall skincare routine is a must!

HYDRATE

If your skin is sensitive and you often suffer from psoriasis or eczema, you need to moisturize with essential oils, serums and creams. Get products that contain ingredients like collagen, aloe and elastin. Collagen and elastin will nourish your

skin and help it recover from any sensitivity usually experienced those first few days when temperatures drop. Slathering on aloe will also help your skin recover as it exfoliates.

USE A THICKER MOISTURIZER

During summer, you can get away with moisturizing with a lighter cream (if you do not have dry skin). But when the temperatures drop in fall, your skin will need extra protection from the cool, dry air. Before bedtime, you need to coat your skin with a thicker moisturizer to lock in moisture.

Pro-Tip:

Use a thick moisturizer that is hydrating but will not irritate or clog your skin’s pores.

GET A LIP MOISTURIZER AND AN EYE CREAM

The skin around your lips and eyes is the most sensitive. Needless to say, it needs more attention than other parts of your skin. If your summer skincare kit

lacked a lip balm or an eye cream, for your fall skincare kit, they are must-haves.

DO NOT USE EXFOLIANTS AND RETINOIDS OFTEN

Colder temperatures make the effects of exfoliants and topical retinoids more irritating on your skin. The cool, dry air sucks up all the moisture and oils from your skin and makes it more vulnerable to the powerful effects of these

ingredients. You might want to cut down on your use of these ingredients or products which contain them.

DO NOT SKIMP UP ON SUNSCREEN

Less sunny days do not mean ‘no sunscreen’. According to dermatologists, there are UV rays from the sun throughout the year. So you need to protect your skin with sunscreen during fall as well. However, you may want to switch to a sunscreen with a lesser SPF than what you were using during summer.

Pro-Tip:

Use sunscreen with not less than SPF 30 every day as part of your fall skincare.

INCLUDE VITAMIN C IN YOUR ROUTINE

During fall, you will need to use products that contain the ‘beauty vitamin’ more than ever. Vitamin C works to fight off UV rays your sunscreen fails to block.

Besides, it also clears up pigmentation, which improves collagen production in the skin, leading to a more radiant, youthful and firmer skin.

GET A HUMIDIFIER

While a humidifier may not fit into your fall skincare kit (laugh out loud!), it is an essential part of your routine. Having one in your home will help improve hydration. Humidifiers increase the moisture in the air, and as the moisture increases, your skin absorbs it and locks it in its outer layer. This keeps your skin hydrated throughout the day.

Pro-Tip:

Keep the humidifier in your bedroom or where you spend the most of your day in your home.

Warning:

Use unscented humidifiers if you are allergy-prone. Scented humidifiers can trigger allergies.
